After much hard work, the Mount Holyoke varsity squash team continues its 2009-2010 season with a winning record of 11-5 and a victorious stint at the Smith/Mount Holyoke Invitational tournament.
The Invitational, hosted here at Mount Holyoke Jan. 22-24, proved to be a successful event for the team as they came out on top for the fourth year in a row. The team then traveled to Maine on Jan. 30 to play Bates College and Colby College. Although Bates College won with a score of 6-3, the Lyons defeated Colby College 7-2.
For the week of January 18-24, players Vidushi Gurunada ’11 and Shara Robertson ’12 collectively earned the title “Lyon of the Week,” exhibiting the squash team’s prowess this season. While Robertson and Gurunada agree that the title came due to their individual performances, they both view their personal efforts as service to the team as a whole. “I am a very team-oriented person,” Robertson said. “I play for myself, but mainly for the team.”
Also on the team are Tempest Bowden ’13, Kathryn Brummer ’13 My-Linh Nguyen ’13, Sarah Moore ’12, Marie Ozann ’12, Paulina Rojek ’12, Navamon Aunaetitrakul ’11, Lila Khan ’10, Katarzyna Kolodziejczak ’10, Laurian Lue Yen ’10, Laura Robinson ’10, Hillela Simpson ’10 and Michelle Zagardo ’10.
Head Coach Allen Fitzsimmons works the team hard at practice, concentrating on drills, footwork and weight lifting. The season ends at Brown University on Feb. 13. Following the season are two final tournaments: the Howe Cup Championships from Feb. 26-28 and the CSA Championships on March 6-7. The rigor with which each player individually prepares has so far paid off, and the team is confident that this will continue. “We perform individually, but we win or lose as a team,” said Gurunada.
