Iraq
Election date has been set as March 6, and then moved to March 7 when the Kurds expressed disapproval. However, the bombings across Baghdad have brought many to lament the situation and the country is in turmoil. The bombs have been strategically planted across the city in a courthouse, two colleges, a mosque and a bank to cause terror and distrust of the prime minister and his security forces. According to the New York Times, the number of deaths reaches at least 121 and there were more than 400 injured.

North Korea

Obama’s envoy, Stephen Bosworth, visited North Korea on Tuesday to determine whether North Korea will participate in the six-nation nuclear talks and whether it will trade in its nuclear weapons for aid and security guarantees. The purpose of his visit appears to have been to persuade North Korea to stop its current nuclear weapons program, but this persuasive approach has been criticized by the South Korean government, who has insisted that international sanctions be placed on North Korea to minimize the North’s bargaining power.

Bolivia
Preliminary results from nationwide elections held on Sunday point toward the current Bolivian president Evo Morales as the winner. 63 percent of the votes are in, and it appears that Morales will win his second five-year term. He is the first indigenous president of Bolivia since the Spanish Conquest, and there is a heated debate on whether he will, just as President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela did, seek to remove presidency term limits.

Brazil
A report by Human Rights Watch claims that police officers in Brazil, from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, have killed more than 11,000 since 2003. Many of the killings result from the police fighting against drug trafficking gangs and have been reported as resistance killings. However, the Human Rights Watch found that there are inconsistencies in the way the police reported the nature of the killings and the crime scene. Security has been a concern in Brazil, the site of 2016 Olympic Games and the 2014 World Cup, and the secretaries of security in Rio and Sao Paulo say the state is working to control and train good police forces.
