Attorney General Martha Coakley, the Democratic nominee for the Kennedy seat, came to the Thirsty Mind to meet the College Democrats, who supported her in the primary. The Dems will continue their campaigning efforts until the special election on Jan. 19. The Republican contender is State Senator Scott Brown.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley entered the Thirsty Mind last Thursday to overwhelming applause. Coakley is running for the senate seat that was held by Senator Edward Kennedy and, as of this past Tuesday, is the only Democrat in the running. Coakley won the Democratic primary on Tuesday with 47 percent of the vote, according to the New York Times.

Brigid Hurn Maloney ’11, president of the Mount Holyoke College Democrats, reported that Coakley came after her campaign learned that she had been endorsed by the organization.

“She told MHC she was interested in speaking [to us],” said Maloney. The student group has been calling voters in Massachusetts and standing on Route 116 with signs to support the candidate.

On Thursday, Dec. 3, the small coffee shop was full to its capacity.

Maloney introduced Coakley as a “strong leader, an exemplary advocate for people, especially women,” adding that she had “never been one to wait.”

Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Michael Flynn praised the late Senator Edward Kennedy as a “champion, an advocate for education,” and said that Coakley would have large shoes to fill if she won the seat.

However, Flynn also said he knew of Coakley’s reputation “as a creative problem solver, and tenacity not to back down on challenging issues. She knows education starts before kindergarten and lasts through higher education,” he said.

Coakley began her speech by asking the crowd if they thought Congress needed more women. After the cheers died down, she continued, “as Senator Kennedy did, I have a responsibility to make college affordable. Otherwise, the dream we aspire to will be unattainable.” She also vowed to remain committed to universal pre-kindergarten programs.
