Anyone planning on attending a social function at Amherst College this weekend had better think again. Canceling parties is just one of the measures that Amherst College is using to protect its student body from swine flu.
An email to the student body from Amherst College president Anthony Marx revealed that between two and six students "have tested positive for Type A influenza, which may be H1N1, commonly known as swine flu."
While the students in question are doing well with treatment, they will be isolated for up to a week in order to protect their classmates. Amherst College is asking anyone with flu symptoms or close contact with one of the infected students to contact Health Services without delay. Students with any condition that could be complicated by the flu are also asked to call in for prevention advice. Proper hygiene and hand washing are also
encouraged.
Because the cases have been mild and may not be swine flu, Amherst College is currently using the above safety measures to avoid closing down the school.
