Yes, it's a popular Smithie spot; however Jake's offers breakfast all day as well as a delicious lunch.
They are famous for their Ruebens as well as their low-priced all-day breakfast. After having both breakfast and lunch at this establishment it's clear that Jake's breakfast dishes are really outstanding.
Their "No Frills Dining" motto is plainly unpretentious, just like their food. What's great about Jake's is that while it's super simple in presentation and ingredients, they offer great extras, which I like to call upgrades. Think homemade bread and local maple syrup for just 50 cents extra!
Along with wonderful daily specials, Jake's offers breakfast and lunch specials, which tend to be a bit more gourmet. Think corncakes with cranberries or banana walnut pancakes, all served with delicious local maple syrup.
The service is classic diner style service: fast and friendly. Everything comes to your table hot. Refills are generous. This is the kind of restaurant that truly caters to the customer, without pressuring you to order the most expensive entree on the menu. However, the most expensive items on the menu don't go above eight or nine dollars. (I went with four friends for breakfast and we spent under $20!)
Jake's atmosphere is inviting. From the rickety chairs to the open kitchen, Jake's decor is old fashioned and homey. Those who work there enjoy interacting with the locals and being an asset to students. They used to stay open all night, but the owner says he got tired. Now they serve diner classics throughout the whole day. This gives the place a great vibe.
Jake's is the kind of restaurant that seems effortless and simple, but is quite delicious. And sometimes that's just what you need.
