Topshop was originally created as a brand within the Peter Robinson department store in Sheffield, England in 1964. In 1974, Topshop was modified into a stand-alone retailer in London, England. Over the years, the store has changed from a tiny basement space to four floors of clothing from the Topshop brand and other designer names. Now the store operates in 100 countries including Ireland, Russia, Australia, and Sweden. Topshop's CEO, Sir Philip Green, is responsible for Topshop's invasion into the US making the brand officially global. During Green's first trip to the United States, Green expressed no worry about the outcome of the New York store despite economic downturn.
Kate Moss began the size zero model craze in the mid 90's. Her face has been shown in ads for Calvin Klein, Roberto Cavalli, and even on Page Six for her cocaine addiction. However, that bump in the road didn't get Moss down. She continues to start fashion trends when she walks down the street wearing her bug-eyed sunglasses and skinny jeans. Girls continue to want to look like and dress like Moss. It is not surprising then that Moss would be recruited by Topshop to create some stylish and trendy clothes for the brand.
On May 1, 2007, Moss launched her very first fashion line for Topshop and she has been a huge contribution to the company ever since. Moss has continued to launch seasonal lines, and even an underwear line. She isn't just a designer for the store but she is also seen in the window displays modeling the latest and most popular fashions that the store has. Moss isn't just bringing her designs to America; she is updating the fashion lingo by teaching America how to speak the British lingo. At Topshop, blue jeans are called trousers, sweaters are called jumpers and brightly colored rompers are known as playsuits.
Topshop has been compared to popular former Europe based stores like H&M, Zara and Uniqlo. These stores copy popular fashion designers like Zac Posen and Dolce and Gabana but make the clothes accessible and cheap. Although Topshop was opened during the worst economy the world has seen in recent years, there have been absolute sellouts of Kate Moss designed dresses. These limited edition dresses include the $510 Diamante Mini, a pink sparkled striped dress, the $250 Swirly Bead Dress, a purple floral print dress, and the Sequin mini, a gold sequined dress.
Watch out for Topshop as it branches out across the United States. I'm positive Topshop will be making its next major move to Los Angeles.
The fashionista-targeted store Topshop is located on Broadway & Broome St. in New York City, however you can always view Kate Moss' and other designers duds by visiting www.topshop.com.
